Assignment 5 - Lenses, Flash, and Clost Up Photography

5.1 Lenses
If I could get any type of lens for my camera, I would get a macro lens. I take a lot of close up shots of my dogs and nature, and I feel like this type of lens would really help me get the type of detail I want without having to crawl up next to whatever I'm taking a picture of. Doing a quick google search, I was able to find that there is a 18-200mm macro lens for my camera available form many sources, such as Amazon and Best Buy, and that it runs about $750-800, depending on the retailer.

5.2 Red Eye

So I finally got some what of a red eye photo (first try on that day) and then my dogs moved.  I guess I can't count on them to be a good subject for a photo.  Above is one of the attempts of Luke posing for a red eye photo.  Sorry it is not the same photo!!

5.3 Flash

No Flash

Fill Flash

5.4 Close-Up Photos

I have a macro setting on my camera so it was easier to take close up photos.  It was much easier to take a close up photo of an object that was outside rather than inside.  When I tried to take photos inside my object was always blurry, even when I used the flash.

Lesson 4 - Fine Tuning Exposure, Using Light and Color

4.1

When looking at the photo in color the objects that pop out to me are the red features on the house.  My eyes go straight to the dark red color of the door, shutters, and front of the house.  While looking at the black and white photo the object that pops out to me are the leaves on the tree.  The sidewalk also pops out to me because it is so light.

Out of the three photos I think the first one looks the best.  It was very hard for my to choose the best photo because the background is very bright in all three photos.  So, I based my choice on the object in the photo (Luke).  I think Luke looks best in photo one, his coloring is close to real life.  I feel like photo two has a lot of shadows around Luke's face and photo three is very dark.

Exposure -2, Shutter 1/250, Aperture F9

Exposure +0.7, Shutter 1/80, Aperture F4.5

To make the second photo exposed correctly I changed the exposure setting to +0.7.  I had to play with the exposure until the photo showed up correctly.

Daylight

Daylight is good for taking photos outside.  The light from the sun can be shot in different ways to create a different affect on a photo.

Incandescent

Shooting photos in incandescent light are a good way to capture warm tones.

Florescent (We are redoing our basement...sorry for the mess!)

Taking pictures under a florescent light will create blue and gray tones.

4.13 Sunset
  • It has been impossible to take a photo of the sunrise or sunset this week.  The weather has not be on my side, it has been cloudy and hazy.  If it is ok I would like to continue trying to get a shot of the sunset or sunrise and submit it next week with the next assignment.  Until then you can enjoy a picture of the sunset I took on my iphone a few weeks ago (I wish I would have read ahead on the assignments!!)
